Free NAPLAN Year 5 Practice

NAPLAN in Year 5 checks the literacy and numeracy skills children have been building at school. The best preparation is steady, low-stress practice of those skills, plus some familiarity with answering questions on a screen. These free games cover the same skill areas with original questions set to a Year 5 level.

Official information
NAP (nap.edu.au)
  • Year 5 students sit four tests: Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.
  • All Year 5 tests, including Writing, are done online. The online tests are adaptive, so questions adjust to how your child is going.
  • Results are reported in four proficiency levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support.

⏱️ New: timed tests. Most games below have a Timed test button: 15 questions in 10 minutes with answers revealed at the end, just like the real thing. Use it once your child is confident in practice mode.

Numeracy

Times tables to 12 × 12, fractions and decimals, place value to the millions, measurement, area and perimeter, angles and data.

Conventions of Language: spelling

Spelling longer words, prefixes and suffixes, and tricky homophones.

Conventions of Language: grammar and punctuation

Commas, apostrophes, direct speech, verb tenses and joining clauses.

Reading

Longer stories, information texts and persuasive texts: main ideas, inference and author’s purpose.

Tips for parents

  • Practise little and often: 10–15 minutes a day is better than long sessions in the week before.
  • Writing is typed in Year 5, so short typing practice helps children get their ideas down quickly.
  • Read together every day and talk about the text: what happened, why, and what a tricky word means.
  • Keep it low-stress. NAPLAN is a snapshot to help schools and families, not a pass-or-fail test.
