Free NAPLAN Year 3 Practice

NAPLAN in Year 3 checks the literacy and numeracy skills children have been building at school. The best preparation is steady, low-stress practice of those skills, plus some familiarity with answering questions on a screen. These free games cover the same skill areas with original questions set to a Year 3 level.

  • Year 3 students sit four tests: Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.
  • Year 3 Writing is done on paper; the other tests are online and adaptive, so questions get harder or easier depending on how your child is going.
  • Results are reported in four proficiency levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support.

⏱️ New: timed tests. Most games below have a Timed test button: 15 questions in 10 minutes with answers revealed at the end, just like the real thing. Use it once your child is confident in practice mode.

Numeracy

Numbers to 1,000, adding and subtracting, early times tables, money, time to the minute, shapes and simple data.

Conventions of Language: spelling

Spelling common words, word families and simple homophones such as there and their.

Conventions of Language: grammar and punctuation

Capital letters, full stops, question marks, joining words and simple word types.

Reading

Short stories and simple information texts, finding facts and working out what words mean.

Tips for parents

  • Practise little and often: 10–15 minutes a day is better than long sessions in the week before.
  • Ask your child to write a short story or recount once a week. Year 3 Writing is on paper, so practise neat handwriting too.
  • Read together every day and talk about the text: what happened, why, and what a tricky word means.
  • Keep it low-stress. NAPLAN is a snapshot to help schools and families, not a pass-or-fail test.
