A simple plan that works
- Learn the easy ones first: 10, 2 and 5. They make the rest easier.
- Use patterns: 4 is double 2, 8 is double 4, 9s add up to 9, and every fact has a twin (3 ร 7 = 7 ร 3), so there are far fewer facts to learn than it seems.
- Practise five minutes a day: play one round of the game on a table, then a mixed round.
- Test for speed: take the times tables test (25 questions, 6 seconds each) or a mad minute sheet. Aim for an answer in about 3 seconds.
- Keep the tricky facts on the fridge and say them aloud at breakfast.

Questions parents ask
What is the fastest way to learn times tables?
Learn them in a sensible order (10, 2, 5, then 3, 4, 8, then 6, 7, 9, 11, 12), use patterns and tricks for each table, and practise for five minutes a day with quick games. Recall comes from little and often, not long sessions.
Which times tables are the hardest?
Most children find 6 ร 7, 6 ร 8, 7 ร 8, 8 ร 9 and 7 ร 7 the trickiest. Learn these as facts on their own, and use known facts to help: 7 ร 8 = 56 is 5, 6, 7, 8 in order.
At what age should children know their times tables?
Most children learn the 2, 5 and 10 times tables at about ages 6โ7, and all tables to 12 ร 12 by about ages 9โ10.
Are times tables games better than flash cards?
Games and flash cards both work. Games add instant feedback, a timer and rewards, which keeps practice going. Mix both, and use a printable chart for spotting patterns.
Are these resources free?
Yes. All games, worksheets and charts here are free, with no sign-up and no adverts.
