Tricks that help

  • Count in 14s: start at 14 and add 14 each time (14, 28, 42, 56, 70…).
  • Split 14 into 10 and 4: 14 × 7 = 10 × 7 + 4 × 7 = 70 + 28 = 98.
  • 14 is double 7, so double the 7 times table: 7 × 7 = 49, and double 49 is 98.
  • 14 × 10 = 140: multiplying by 10 adds a zero to the end.
  • Every fact has a twin: 14 × 7 = 7 × 14 = 98. If you know one, you know both.
  • The last digits of the first ten answers go 4, 8, 2, 6, 0, 4, 8, 2, 6, 0.
