About Number Bonds
Number bonds are pairs of numbers that join to make a whole, like 7 and 3 making 10. Knowing them by heart is one of the most useful early maths skills: it makes adding, subtracting and bridging through 10 much quicker, and it shows how addition and subtraction are linked.
Children in Nursery & K1 can start with Make 5 using a five frame. Make 10 with a ten frame suits K2, Make 20 suits Primary 1, and Make 100 with multiples of 10 and then 5 suits Primary 2–3.

Frequently asked questions
What is a number bond?
A number bond is a pair of numbers that add together to make a given number. For example, 6 and 4 are a number bond to 10 because 6 + 4 = 10.
What is a ten frame?
A ten frame is a box of 10 spaces in two rows of five. Filling some spaces with counters makes it easy to see how many more are needed to make 10.
Why are number bonds to 10 important?
They are the building blocks of mental maths. Children who know them can quickly add numbers like 8 + 5 by making 10 first (8 + 2 + 3), and can use them to find bonds to 20 and 100.
