About Colouring Pages

Colouring is one of the best everyday activities for young children. Choosing a part of a picture and filling it carefully builds the fine motor control and hand–eye coordination children later need for holding a pencil and forming letters. Printing the outlines and colouring them with chunky crayons strengthens the small muscles in the hand, while tapping on a screen helps children aim precisely. Both build focus: a child who stays with one picture until every part is filled is practising concentration and the satisfaction of finishing something.

Every picture is an original line drawing made for this site, with bold outlines and closed shapes that are easy to fill. Easy pictures, for Nursery & K1 and K2, have a handful of big parts: a cat, fish, turtle, butterfly, car, sailing boat, flower, sun and cloud, rainbow, snail, house, the numbers 1, 2 and 3, and A is for apple. Detailed pictures, for Primary 1–3, have more and smaller parts to plan: a puppy, owl, elephant, lion, rocket, steam train, hot air balloon, apple tree, birthday cake, robot, dinosaur, castle and a friendly dragon.

Colouring is also a natural time to talk. Name the colours together (“Which paint is turquoise? Is the sky blue or navy?”), count the stars on the number 3 page, sound out “a” for apple, and ask why a child chose each colour. There are no wrong answers: purple elephants and green suns are welcome. Mixing screen painting with printed pages and real crayons gives children the best of both: quick, mess-free experimenting on screen, and the hand strength that comes from colouring on paper.

Frequently asked questions

Are these colouring pages free to print?

Yes. Every picture is free to colour online and free to print for use at home or in the classroom. Open a picture and press Print this picture to get a blank outline on its own page, sized for A4 or Letter paper. There is no sign-up and nothing to download.

What ages are they for?

The pages suit children aged about 3 to 8. Easy pictures have a few big parts that are simple to tap or colour, which suits preschoolers and kindergarten children. Detailed pictures have more and smaller parts, for children who want more of a challenge and can plan their colours.

How do I save my child’s picture?

Press Save picture while painting, or on the results screen, to download the painted picture as an image. Paintings are also kept automatically in this browser on this device, so your child can come back and keep painting later.

Can my child play with a keyboard or switch device?

Yes. Press Tab to move through the paints and each part of the picture, and Enter or Space to choose a paint or fill a part. Each part is read out as “Region 3 of 12”, along with its paint, for screen reader users.

How are the stars worked out?

Colouring is a creative activity, so there is no wrong colour. Stars simply reflect how much of the picture is filled in: three stars for nine parts out of ten or more, two stars for at least half, and one star for making a start.
