About Read & Answer

Reading comprehension means understanding what you read, not just saying the words. Every passage in this game is short and written especially for it, followed by questions of three kinds: finding a detail in the text, working out what a word means from the sentences around it, and reading between the lines to work out why something happened or how a character feels.

Short stories use simple sentences for early readers in Grades 1–2. Stories are longer, with more inference questions, for Grades 3–4. Fact files cover real topics such as honeybees, the Moon, volcanoes and the water cycle for Grades 5–6. The passage stays on the screen, so children learn the good habit of looking back at the text to check their answer.

Frequently asked questions

What age is this reading game for?

It suits children aged about 6 to 11. Short stories are for newer readers, and fact files are for confident readers.

What is an inference question?

A question where the answer is not written in the text, so you use clues. If a puppy is wagging its tail, you can infer that it is happy.

How can I help my child with reading comprehension?

Ask them to point to the part of the text that proves their answer. Talking about stories at home, and asking "why do you think…?", builds the same skills.
