Bees at Work
Honey bees live together in a hive that can hold tens of thousands of bees. Each bee has a job. The queen lays the eggs. Worker bees, which are all female, collect nectar and pollen from flowers, clean the hive and look after the young. Male bees are called drones. When a worker finds a good patch of flowers, she flies back and does a special “waggle dance” that tells the other bees which way to go and how far. Bees turn nectar into honey, which they store to eat during winter when there are fewer flowers.
