What your child learns

  • Sequencing: putting instructions in the right order
  • Planning a route on a grid using up, down, left and right
  • Debugging: finding and fixing mistakes in a program
  • Using loops (repeat blocks) to write shorter code
  • Finding the most efficient solution to a problem

About Code the Robot

Coding is about giving clear, step-by-step instructions, and that is a skill children can learn long before they type a line of code. In Code the Robot, every puzzle is a small program: children plan a route, turn it into arrow commands, run it and watch what happens. When the robot bumps into a wall, they debug their program, just like real programmers do.

Beginner puzzles on a 5 × 5 grid suit Senior Infants to 1st Class. Explorer adds walls on a 6 × 6 grid for Classes 2–3, so children must plan a detour. Loops, for Classes 4–6, has a block limit on a 7 × 7 grid, so children must use repeat blocks (×2, ×3, ×4) to shorten their code. Every puzzle is checked by the computer to make sure it can be solved, and the game knows the shortest possible program, so children can aim for a perfect score.

Frequently asked questions

Do children need to read to play?

Very little. The commands are arrows, the robot, star and walls are pictures, and the game shows the program as a row of arrow blocks. A grown-up may need to explain the buttons the first time.

What is a loop in coding?

A loop repeats an instruction. Instead of writing → → → →, you can write → ×4. Loops make programs shorter and easier to read, which is why the Loops level sets a limit on how many blocks you can use.

How are stars and points worked out?

For each puzzle, you get 3 stars if your program is as short as the best possible solution, 2 stars if it is up to 2 blocks longer, and 1 star otherwise. Points also go down a little each time the robot crashes or stops early.
