How to play Area & Perimeter

  1. Choose a level: count squares, rectangles, L-shapes or mixed.
  2. Read the question carefully: does it ask for the area (space inside) or the perimeter (distance around)?
  3. Count, multiply or add using the side lengths shown, then pick or type your answer.
  4. Answer 10 questions, build a streak and try to earn three stars.

What your child learns

  • Finding area by counting unit squares
  • Finding perimeter by counting edges
  • Using area = length × width for rectangles
  • Using perimeter = 2 × (length + width)
  • Splitting L-shapes into two rectangles to find their area
  • Adding all the sides of a compound shape
  • Using square units such as cm²

About Area & Perimeter

Area and perimeter are easy to mix up. Perimeter is the distance all the way around the outside of a shape, measured in units like cm. Area is the amount of flat space inside, measured in square units like cm². This game starts with shapes drawn on a grid so kids can see and count the unit squares and edges, which builds a real understanding before any formulas.

The rectangles level moves on to labelled side lengths, using area = length × width and perimeter = 2 × (length + width). The L-shapes level asks kids to split a compound shape into two rectangles, or add all six sides. Wrong answers include common mistakes, like giving the area instead of the perimeter or forgetting to double. Counting squares suits 3rd Class, rectangles suit 4th Class, and L-shapes suit Classes 5–6. On the US site, some questions use inches and feet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between area and perimeter?

Perimeter is the total length around the outside of a shape, like a fence around a garden. Area is the space inside it, like the grass in the garden. Perimeter uses units like cm, and area uses square units like cm².

How do you find the area of an L-shape?

Split it into two rectangles with one straight line. Find the area of each rectangle (length × width), then add the two areas together. You can also find the area of the whole big rectangle and take away the missing corner.

What age is this area and perimeter game for?

It suits children aged about 8 to 12. Start with counting squares, then try rectangles and L-shapes.
