About Number Line Ninja
The number line is one of the most useful pictures in maths. It shows that numbers have an order and a size, it links whole numbers to fractions and decimals, and it makes negative numbers easy to understand. Reading a number line is also the same skill as reading a ruler, a thermometer or a measuring jug.
The key skill is working out what each gap is worth: count the gaps between two labelled numbers and share out the difference. Whole numbers suit Years 2–3, fractions suit Years 3–4, and decimals and negative numbers challenge children in Years 5–6. Every wrong answer comes with an explanation that shows the counting.

Frequently asked questions
How do you read a number line?
Find two labelled numbers, count the gaps between them and work out what each gap is worth. Then count the gaps from a labelled number to the arrow.
How do you put a fraction on a number line?
The denominator tells you how many equal parts to split each whole into, and the numerator tells you how many parts to count from zero. So 3/4 is three of four equal parts from 0 to 1.
Why is −7 smaller than −2?
On a number line, numbers get smaller as you move left. −7 is further left of zero than −2, so it is smaller, just like 7 degrees below zero is colder than 2 degrees below zero.
