How to play Typing Test for Kids

  1. Choose a level and a time. Easy has short, common words in small letters. Medium has sentences with capital letters and full stops. Hard has longer sentences with commas, question marks and numbers.
  2. Start typing the words in the box. The clock only starts when you press your first key, so take your time to get ready.
  3. The word to type next is highlighted. Letters you type correctly turn green, and mistakes turn red and are underlined. Press the space bar to move on to the next word, or Backspace to fix a mistake in the word you are typing.
  4. When the time is up, see your speed in words per minute, your accuracy and the number of mistakes, and compare your speed with our typing speed by age guide.

About Typing Test for Kids

Typing speed is usually measured in words per minute, or WPM. Because some words are long and some are short, a โ€œwordโ€ in a typing test always means 5 characters, including spaces. This test gives a net WPM: only words typed correctly count towards your speed, so careful typing really pays off. Accuracy shows the share of key presses that were right first time.

Easy suits beginners in Grades 1โ€“2, with short, common words and no capital letters. Medium, for Grades 3โ€“4, adds capital letters and full stops. Hard, for Grades 5โ€“6, has longer sentences with commas, apostrophes, question marks and numbers. Every passage is original and written for children, and the words are spelled the same in British and American English. Try the same level and time once a week to see how much faster you are getting.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed for a child?

As a rough guide, children aged 7 to 8 often type about 5 to 10 words per minute, 9 to 10 year olds about 10 to 20, and 11 to 12 year olds about 20 to 25. Children vary a lot, and regular practice makes a big difference. Accuracy matters more than speed when you are learning.

How is words per minute (WPM) worked out?

Every 5 characters, including spaces, count as one word. We add up the characters in the words you typed correctly, divide by 5 and then by the number of minutes. This is called net WPM, because words with mistakes do not count.

Can my child take the typing test on a tablet or phone?

Yes. Tap the typing box to open the on-screen keyboard. A real keyboard gives a truer result, because on-screen keyboards are slower for most people.

How can my child type faster?

Learn to touch type with the right finger on each key, using our Typing Rockets game, and practice for 5 to 10 minutes a day. Speed comes naturally once the fingers know where the keys are.
