About Fractions, Decimals & Percentages

Fractions, decimals and percentages are three ways of writing the same thing: 1/2, 0.5 and 50% are all exactly a half. Being able to switch between them quickly makes everyday math, like discounts, scores and measurements, much easier, and it is a key skill in the last years of primary school.

Every answer is worked out exactly, and each explanation shows the method: making the denominator 10, 100 or 1000, remembering that percent means "out of 100", and finding 10% by dividing by 10. In compare and order, the trick is to change every amount into the same form, usually decimals, before comparing.

Frequently asked questions

How do you change a fraction into a decimal?

Make the bottom number 10, 100 or 1000. For example, 3/4 = 75/100 = 0.75, and 1/8 = 125/1000 = 0.125.

How do you find 10% of a number?

Divide by 10. So 10% of 80 is 8. From there, 20% is double that and 5% is half of it.

What age is this game for?

It suits children aged about 9 to 12. Start with fraction โ†” decimal, then move on to percentages and comparing.
