How to play Letter Tracing Game
- Choose Lowercase, Capitals, Numbers or My name, and press Play. For My name, type a first name and the game turns it into letters to trace.
- Put your finger on the green dot and follow the arrow along the dotted path. Each stroke is numbered, so you can see which part comes first. Sparkles follow your finger as you trace.
- If you lift your finger part-way, just carry on from the green dot. If you wander off the path or go the wrong way, the stroke starts again with a gentle reminder.
- When the letter is finished, a picture word pops up and is spoken, such as a is for apple. Press the green arrow for the next letter. Stuck? Press Show me to watch the letter being written, or Skip to move on.

About Letter Tracing Game
Good handwriting starts with good habits. Children who learn to start each letter in the right place and move in the right direction write faster and more neatly later on, and find joined handwriting easier. This game teaches the print taught in Nursery, Kindergarten and Grade 1 classrooms in Australia, the UK and the US: simple ball-and-stick letters, round letters such as c, a, d, o and g that start at the top right and go anticlockwise, tall letters that start at the top line, and letters with tails that drop below the line.
Every letter is drawn on writing lines with a top line, a dashed middle line and a baseline, so children see where letters sit. The tracing check is deliberately forgiving for little fingers: the path is wide, lifting a finger is allowed, and going off the path just starts that stroke again. There is no timer and no score to worry about. The My name mode lets children practice the word they most want to write, with a capital first letter and lowercase letters after it, just as teachers ask. Children who use a keyboard can watch every letter being written with Show me and move on with Skip.

Frequently asked questions
What age is letter tracing for?
Letter tracing suits children from about 3 to 6. Three and four-year-olds can start with capitals, numbers and their own name, and children starting school can move on to lowercase letters, which are the ones they will use most.
Which handwriting style does the game teach?
It uses simple print (ball-and-stick style) as taught in many schools in Australia, the UK and the US. Each letter has numbered strokes and arrows showing where to start and which way to go. Your child’s school may teach small differences, such as a flick at the end of some letters, and that is fine.
Why does starting in the right place matter?
Children who start letters in the right place and go the right way form letters more quickly and neatly, and mix up fewer letters such as b and d. It also makes joined handwriting much easier later.
Can my child use a stylus or a mouse?
Yes. The game works with a finger on a phone or tablet, a stylus, or a mouse on a computer. Tracing with a finger on a tablet is the closest to writing with a pencil.
Is my child’s name saved anywhere?
The name is only kept on your device so it is ready next time. It is never sent anywhere.
