How to play Rounding Rally

  1. Choose what to round to: nearest 10, 100, 1,000, or decimals.
  2. Pick whether to tap an answer or type it.
  3. Use the number line: it shows the two values the number sits between and the halfway point.
  4. Remember: if the number is exactly halfway, it rounds up!

About Rounding Rally

Rounding is the key to estimation: it lets children check whether an answer is sensible, work out rough totals in their heads and make sense of big numbers. Every question shows a number line with the two possible answers, so children can see which one the number is closer to, not just memorise a rule.

Most children start rounding to the nearest 10 in Grades 2–3, move on to 100 and 1,000 in Grades 3–4, and round decimals in Grades 5–6. Halfway numbers such as 45 or 3.5 appear often, so the rule that 5 rounds up becomes automatic.

Frequently asked questions

How do you round to the nearest 10?

Look at the ones digit. If it is 5 or more, round up to the next ten; if it is less than 5, round down. So 47 rounds to 50 and 43 rounds to 40.

Why does 5 round up?

A number ending in 5 is exactly halfway, so it is equally close to both tens. Mathematicians agreed on a simple rule to round halfway numbers up, so everyone gets the same answer.

What age do children learn rounding?

Rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 is usually taught around ages 7 to 9, and rounding decimals around ages 10 to 12.
