For grown-upsFishing Fun is a free, calm counting game for young children. Fish swim slowly round a pond, each carrying a number or a set of dots. Children listen to the question, such as “Catch the fish with 5” or “Catch a fish that makes 10 with 3”, and tap the right fish to reel it in.

How to play Fishing Fun

  1. Choose a level and press Play: Numbers to 5, Numbers to 10, Numbers to 20, Make 10 or More and less.
  2. Listen to the question, or read it at the top. Press the speaker button to hear it again.
  3. Tap the fish you want to catch. The fishing line drops down and gently reels it in. Keyboard players can press Tab to move between the fish and Enter to cast.
  4. Caught the wrong fish? It wriggles off the hook and you get a clue, so you can try again. There is no timer, so take as long as you like.
  5. Catch 8 fish to fill your bucket. At the end you see them all swimming in your fish tank, and every new kind of fish is added to your collection.

About Fishing Fun

Young children learn number best through short, playful practice with lots of looking, counting and talking. In Fishing Fun every question is read aloud and shown with pictures, so children who cannot read yet can play on their own. The fish move slowly and the game never hurries anyone: there is no timer and no lives to lose. Children who prefer stillness can turn on Reduce motion in the comfort settings, and the fish wait calmly in the pond.

Numbers to 5 suits Junior Kindergarten: children match numbers and count dots arranged like dice. Numbers to 10, for Kindergarten, adds counting the fish in the bucket, and dots arranged in two rows of five, like a ten frame, so children start to see 7 as 5 and 2. Numbers to 20 and Make 10 suit Grade 1, with teen numbers, one more and one less, and ten-frame pictures for number bonds such as 3 and 7. More and less, for Grades 1–2, asks children to choose the bigger or smaller number. Every wrong catch gets a friendly clue, and each new fish joins the collection in your fish tank.

Frequently asked questions

What age is Fishing Fun for?

Fishing Fun is for children aged about 3 to 7. Three and four-year-olds can start with Numbers to 5, and children in their first years of school can try Numbers to 20, Make 10 and More and less.

Does my child need to read?

No. Every question is spoken aloud (when sound is on) and shown with a big number and pictures, such as dots or a ten frame. Press the speaker button to hear a question again.

Is there a timer?

No. The fish swim slowly and wait as long as your child needs. If a wrong fish is caught, it simply wriggles off the hook with a clue, and your child can try again.

What are number bonds to 10?

Number bonds to 10 are pairs of numbers that make 10, such as 3 and 7 or 6 and 4. Knowing them by heart makes adding and taking away much easier later. The Make 10 level shows each bond on a ten frame.

Can the fish stop moving?

Yes. Turn on Reduce motion in the comfort settings (or on your device) and the fish stay still in the pond, so they are easier to tap.

What is the fish tank?

Every fish your child catches goes into the fish tank at the end of the game. There are 12 kinds of fish to collect, and the collection is saved on your device.
