How to play Football Maths
- Pick your team name and kit, the questions (from adding to 20 up to fractions, decimals and percentages, or a bonus English spelling and word game) and the game: a penalty shootout or a quick match.
- To shoot, answer the question first. A right answer gives you big golden targets in the corners and a slow keeper; a wrong answer gives smaller targets, a quicker keeper and a worked explanation.
- Then aim: tap or click anywhere in the goal to shoot there, or press Shoot (or Space) when the moving marker is on a golden target. Shots inside a target always beat the keeper.
- To defend, answer the question to read the striker: a right answer shows which way they are looking. Choose to dive left, stay in the middle or dive right, with the buttons, the arrow keys or by tapping the goal.

About Football Maths
Penalties are the most exciting moment in a football match, and Football Maths turns every one into a maths question. A right answer makes the shot easier, with big golden targets, a slower aiming marker and a keeper who reacts late, so children can feel straight away that good maths leads to goals. A wrong answer is never the end: the shot is just harder, and a short worked method, such as “5 × 7 = 35, then 2 more groups of 7 is 14, so 7 × 7 = 49”, shows how to get it next time. Defending works the same way, with a right answer letting you read where the striker will shoot.
Adding and taking away to 20 suits Year 1, and to 100 suits Year 2. Times tables suit Years 3–4, with division facts in Year 4. Bigger multiplication and division and fractions of amounts suit Year 5, and fractions, decimals and percentages suit Year 6. Children design their own team, choosing from fun names such as the Rocket Rabbits and Thunder Penguins and a kit in their favourite colours. The penalty shootout is five kicks each and then sudden death; the quick match adds passing moves, where each pass is a question that builds up to a shot.

Frequently asked questions
How do right and wrong answers change a shot?
A right answer gives bigger golden targets, a slower aiming marker, a steadier shot and a keeper who dives late. A wrong answer gives small targets and a sharper keeper, and shows a worked explanation so your child can learn the method.
How do you save a penalty?
When the other team shoots, answer the question first. A right answer shows which way the striker is looking (they are right most of the time). Then choose to dive left, stay in the middle or dive right.
What is the difference between the shootout and the quick match?
The penalty shootout is five kicks each, then sudden death until one team wins. The quick match has seven attacks: in yours, two passing questions build up to a shot, and every right answer makes that shot better.
Is there an English version?
Yes. Choose English: spelling & words for questions such as “Which word is spelt correctly?” and “Which word means very big?”. Every word is spelt the same way in British and American English.
Are the teams real football clubs?
No. All the team names, kits and players are made up for this game, such as the Rocket Rabbits, Galaxy Geckos and Zoom Zebras.
