How to play Spelling Bee Championship
- Choose the word list for your school year and press Play. Younger children spell with a few big letter tiles; older children use the full alphabet keys or a keyboard.
- Listen to the word and the sentence. Press Hear word or Sentence to listen again as many times as you like. The sentence is also shown with the word left out.
- Spell the word, then press โ or Enter. If you are nearly right, the green letters stay and you try again from the first mistake. Stuck? A hint shows the next letter.
- Each round has three words. Spell all twelve to finish the Semi-final and the Championship, and keep a streak going for bonus honey. At the end you will see the tricky bits to practise.

About Spelling Bee Championship
A spelling bee asks children to hold a word in their head and write it from sound alone, which is exactly what they do when they write their own sentences. Each word is read aloud on its own, then in a short sentence, then on its own again, just like a real spelling bee. A near miss is never just a cross: the letters that are right turn green, the child carries on from the first mistake, and a word that is still wrong is shown with its tricky bit highlighted, such as nece[ss]ary, so the next try is better.
The word lists follow what children learn at school. Children in Grade RR and Grade R spell short words like cat, ship and frog with a handful of big letter tiles and a picture. Children in Grades 1โ2 meet vowel sounds and common words like night, friend and because, while children in Grades 3โ6 work through the tricky words that schools expect by the end of primary, from island and favourite to accommodate and pronunciation. Words that are spelt differently in American English, such as colour, follow the spelling used in your country, and the other spelling is accepted with a note. On a device that cannot speak, each word is shown for a moment first so the game becomes a look, cover, write, check challenge.

Frequently asked questions
How does the spelling bee game work?
Each game has four bee rounds of three words: the Warm-up, the Garden round, the Semi-final and the Championship. Words get harder as the rounds go on. Spelling a word right first time earns honey, and a streak of right answers earns bonus honey.
What if my child spells a word wrong?
The letters that are right stay green and your child tries again from the first mistake. If the second try is also wrong, the game shows the word with the tricky bit highlighted and reads it out letter by letter. Every missed word appears in the Words to practise list at the end.
Can younger children play?
Yes. The Preschool and Foundation lists use short words with a picture, and children tap a few big letter tiles instead of the whole alphabet. The word and sentence are read aloud, so children do not need to read the sentence.
What if my device cannot read the words aloud?
The game checks for speech. If there is none, each word appears for a few seconds and then hides, so your child spells it from memory, and the Peek button shows it again. Most phones, tablets and computers can read the words aloud.
Which spelling does the game use?
It uses the spelling taught in your country, so words like favourite and neighbour follow your local spelling. If your child types the other accepted spelling, it still counts and the game explains the difference.
