How to play Times Tables Tower Defenders

  1. Choose a map (Meadow, Desert or Snow), the times tables you want to practise and Normal or Calm mode. Calm mode has slower gremlins and the castle can never fall.
  2. Answer the times tables questions in the panel by typing or tapping the number pad. Every right answer earns gems, quick answers earn bonus gems, and a streak of right answers multiplies them.
  3. Tap a stone build spot on the map (or choose one with the arrow keys), then pick a tower: Archer (A), Cannon (C), Frost (F) or Lightning (L). Select a tower to upgrade it (U) or sell it (X).
  4. Some gremlins carry a fact on their shield, such as 7 × 8. Answer that fact correctly during the wave and your towers do double damage to them. Survive all 15 waves, including a boss every fifth wave, to earn up to three stars.

About Times Tables Tower Defenders

Tower games are some of the most popular online games for children, because they mix quick reactions with real planning. In this one, the only way to earn gems is to answer times tables questions, so children happily answer dozens of facts in a single game. Quick answers earn bonus gems and a streak multiplies them, which rewards the instant recall that makes later maths, such as division, fractions and long multiplication, so much easier.

Pick the tables to suit your child: 2, 5 and 10 for Year 2, 3 and 4 for Year 3, 6, 7 and 8 for Year 4, and 9, 11 and 12 or all tables mixed for Years 5–6. Gremlins with a fact on their shield take double damage once that fact has been answered, which nudges players to practise exactly the facts on screen. At the end, the game lists every fact that was answered wrongly or slowly, so you know what to practise next. Calm mode slows everything down and the castle never falls, which is ideal for younger or newer players.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get more gems?

Answer the times tables questions in the panel next to the map (under the map on a phone). Each right answer earns gems, answers in under a few seconds earn extra gems, and three or more right answers in a row multiply your gems. Defeating gremlins also drops a few gems.

What do the facts on the gremlins’ shields mean?

A gremlin with a shield such as 6 × 7 is tougher, but once you answer that fact correctly during the wave, every tower does double damage to it. The shield facts for the next wave are shown in the panel, so you can answer them before the wave starts.

Which tower is best?

Archers are cheap and quick. Cannons hit groups of gremlins at once. Frost towers slow gremlins down so other towers get more shots. Lightning jumps between several gremlins. A mix of towers, upgraded over time, works best, especially for the boss waves.

Is there a way to play without losing?

Yes. Choose Calm mode: gremlins walk more slowly, there is more time between waves and the castle can never fall, so children can focus on their times tables.
