Ping Pong Maths is a free table tennis game for kids with a maths twist. The table is covered in numbers, and every rally has a goal such as โ€œhit multiples of 4โ€ or โ€œhit pairs that make 10โ€. Land the ball on a number that fits for bonus stars and a curving spin shot that is hard to return. Play the computer or a friend on the same device.

How to play Ping Pong Maths

  1. Choose the maths (number bonds, odd and even, greater and less than, multiples or factors) and your opponent: Pip is easy, Zara is medium and Turbo is hard. Choose 2 players to play a friend on the same device.
  2. Move your bat with the arrow keys or W and S, or drag on the table. Press Space, tap the Serve button or let go of the table to serve. A serve bounces once on your side and once on the other side.
  3. Read the goal at the top, then aim: the edge of your bat sends the ball to the side, and the yellow ring shows where it will land. Land it on a number that fits the goal for bonus stars and a spin shot that curves after it bounces.
  4. If a number does not fit, the game tells you why. Win a point when the other player misses the ball. First to 11 points wins, but you must win by 2. Two players: Player 1 uses W and S (Space serves), Player 2 uses โ†‘ and โ†“ (Enter serves), or each drags on their own half.

About Ping Pong Maths

Ping Pong Maths mixes a fast, satisfying sport with quick number decisions. Each rally has one goal, and the table shows four numbers, so in the split second before every shot children are checking numbers against a rule: is 28 a multiple of 4? Is 9 a factor of 24? Is 74 greater than 47? Landing on a right number is rewarded straight away with bonus stars and a spin shot that curves after the bounce, and a wrong number explains itself (for example โ€œ30 is not a multiple of 4: 7 ร— 4 = 28 and 8 ร— 4 = 32โ€), so every shot is a tiny lesson.

Number bonds and odd and even numbers suit Year 1 and Year 2. Greater and less than suits Year 2 and Year 3, with three-digit numbers mixed in. Multiples, from the 2 times table to the 12 times table, suit Year 3 and Year 4, and factors suit Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6. The mixed game swaps the goal every rally. Children also learn the real rules of table tennis: a game is first to 11, you must win by 2, and each player serves two points in a row (one at a time from 10โ€“10). Play Pip, Zara or Turbo, or two players can share one keyboard or one tablet.

Frequently asked questions

What are the rules of table tennis scoring?

A game is played to 11 points, and you must win by 2 points, so at 10โ€“10 play carries on until one player leads by 2 (for example 12โ€“10). Each player serves 2 points in a row, then the serve passes to the other player. From 10โ€“10 the serve changes after every point.

How do you aim in Ping Pong Maths?

Where the ball hits your bat sets the direction: the middle of the bat sends it straight, and the edges send it to the sides. A yellow ring shows where the ball will land, so move your bat a little to steer it onto a number that fits the goal.

Can two players play on one device?

Yes. Choose 2 players. On a keyboard, Player 1 uses W and S and serves with Space, and Player 2 uses the โ†‘ and โ†“ arrows and serves with Enter. On a phone or tablet, each player drags on their own half of the table.

What does a spin shot do?

When you land the ball on a number that fits the goal, it becomes a spin shot. It curves through the air and kicks sideways after it bounces, which makes it much harder to return. You also earn bonus stars, and more for a streak of right numbers.

Which maths does the game cover?

Number bonds to 10 and 20, odd and even numbers, greater than and less than (up to three-digit numbers), multiples in all the times tables from 2 to 12, and factors. The mixed game changes the goal every rally.
