The Best Free Educational Websites for Kids: An Honest Guide

There are thousands of “free” learning websites for children, and they vary hugely. Some are genuinely free, some are free with lots of adverts, and some are free for a few levels before asking for a subscription. As tutors, we get asked which ones are worth using all the time. Here is our honest list, including our own site, with what each one does best.

What makes a learning website worth your child’s time?

  • It teaches something specific. Good sites practice a clear skill (times tables, phonics, reading) rather than just keeping children busy.
  • It adapts or offers levels. Children should be challenged without being frustrated.
  • It is safe. No chat with strangers, no pressure to buy, and few or no adverts.
  • It is quick to start. Children lose interest if they have to sign up or wait for long loading screens.
  • It works on what you have. Tablets, phones, Chromebooks and old laptops.

Math

For understanding new ideas, video lessons such as Khan Academy are excellent. For fluency, the quick recall that makes everything else easier, short games work best: try our times tables hub, the addition game or the Daily Math Challenge.

Reading and phonics

Early readers need lots of practice hearing and blending sounds. Phonics sites and apps help, alongside our phonics game, sight words list and, most importantly, reading real books together every day.

Typing and computer skills

Typing is now a real school skill. A few minutes a day with a typing game builds speed and accuracy far faster than hunting for keys.

Thinking skills

Puzzles such as sudoku, tangrams and logic games build the reasoning used in selective tests and math problem solving.

How to use learning websites well

  1. Keep sessions short: 10 to 20 minutes is plenty for most children.
  2. Choose one goal: “this week we are working on the 7 times table” beats random clicking.
  3. Sit with younger children: talk about what they are doing and celebrate progress.
  4. Mix screen and paper: a printable worksheet or a real book after a game helps learning stick.
  5. Watch for frustration: if a level is too hard, step back a level. Confidence matters more than speed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free educational website for kids?

It depends on the goal. Khan Academy is excellent for math lessons, BBC Bitesize for UK school subjects, PBS Kids for young children, and Success Tutoring Games for quick, ad-free skill practice and printable worksheets.

Are free learning websites safe for children?

The best ones are. Look for no chat features, no pressure to buy, and few or no adverts. Sites run by non-profits and public broadcasters are usually the safest.

How much screen time should learning games take?

For primary-aged children, 10 to 20 minutes of focused practice is enough. Balance it with reading, play and time outdoors.

Are free educational games actually effective?

Yes, for practice and fluency. Games are great for building quick recall of facts like times tables and sight words. New ideas are still best taught by a person first.
