About Map Quiz
Knowing where places are is the foundation of geography. A child who can picture the map can make sense of the news, the weather report, history lessons and travel. Map Quiz works like the click-the-map games geography teachers love: a place is named, and the player finds it on a real map. Each first-try answer turns green, so children can watch the map fill up as they learn.
Younger children, around Classes 1–2, can start with the seven continents and five oceans. Children in Classes 3–4 can learn the states, territories, provinces or regions of their own country, and of other countries too. Older children in Classes 5–6 can take on the world map, with a level of well-known countries and a harder level of 100 countries. Learn mode shows names on hover so children can explore first, and Quiz mode hides them for a real test.
All the maps are drawn from Natural Earth, a free public-domain map collection used by mapmakers around the world. Borders follow the standard Natural Earth outlines.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find very small places?
Zoom in with the + button, by pinching on a phone or tablet, or with the scroll wheel on a computer, then drag the map to move around. Very small places, such as the Australian Capital Territory, Delaware or Singapore, also have a round marker you can click.
What is the difference between Learn and Quiz mode?
In Learn mode, pointing at the map shows the name of each place, and places you have found are labelled. In Quiz mode there are no names at all, so you have to remember. Quiz mode scores more points.
How is the score worked out?
Your score is the number of places you found on the first try. Places you find on a later try still score some points, and places shown after three wrong tries score none. Places to practise are listed at the end.
Can I play with a keyboard?
Yes. Type the name of a place in the answer box below the map, use the arrow keys to pick from the list and press Enter. With the map selected, the + and − keys zoom and the arrow keys move the map.
