How to play Coding Quest

  1. Choose a level on the world map. Each world teaches a new coding idea, and new levels open as you solve them.
  2. Tap a block, or drag it, to add it to your program. Move, Turn, Jump and Collect make Pip act. Repeat, If, P1 and P2 make your program smarter.
  3. Press Run to watch Pip follow your program one block at a time, or Step to go one block at a time. If Pip gets stuck, the block that went wrong lights up red so you can fix it.
  4. Collect every gem and reach the flag to finish the level. Use as few blocks as you can for 3 stars!

What your child learns

  • Sequencing: putting instructions in the right order
  • Loops: using Repeat blocks to shorten a program
  • Functions: building your own blocks and reusing them
  • Conditionals: using If and else to make decisions
  • Debugging: finding and fixing mistakes in a program
  • Spatial reasoning: left, right and facing direction

About Coding Quest

Coding is about giving a computer clear, exact instructions, and block coding lets children learn the big ideas long before they type a line of code. In Coding Quest, every level is a small puzzle: children plan a route for Pip the robot, build a program from blocks, run it and watch what happens. When Pip gets stuck, the game shows exactly which block went wrong, so children learn to debug their own code just like real programmers.

The 45 levels are split into five worlds. Sequences, for UKG to Class 1, uses simple Move, Turn, Jump and Collect blocks. Loops, for Classes 1–3, adds the Repeat block, including loops inside loops. Functions, for Classes 3–4, lets children build their own blocks called P1 and P2. Conditionals, for Classes 4–5, adds If and else blocks that check for gems, paths and steps. Debugging, for Classes 5–6, starts every level with a broken program to fix. Every level has been checked by running its solution, and the game knows the shortest program we found, so children can aim for 3 stars.

Frequently asked questions

Do children need to read to play?

Only a little at the start. Every block has a picture as well as a word, and the first world needs just four blocks. A grown-up may like to read the one-line tip that introduces each new block.

Can my child play with a keyboard?

Yes. Use Tab to reach the blocks, the arrow keys to choose one and Enter to add it. In your program, the arrow keys move between blocks, Delete removes one and Shift with an arrow key moves a block earlier or later.

How are stars worked out?

You get 3 stars if your program uses no more blocks than the shortest program we found, 2 stars if it is up to 2 blocks longer, and 1 star otherwise. Using a hint gives 2 stars at most. Your stars and unlocked levels are saved on this device.

How is this different from Code the Robot?

Code the Robot is a quick game of arrow commands on a flat grid. Coding Quest is a longer adventure with jumping, collecting, Repeat, If and function blocks, and a whole world of debugging puzzles.
