Free Gifted Test Practice: Reasoning Games

Many school districts and boards screen children for gifted and talented programs with a reasoning test. Common tests include CogATยฎ in the US and CCAT in Canada, which look at verbal, quantitative and nonverbal reasoning. Short, regular puzzle practice helps children feel comfortable with these question styles.

Quick facts

When
Set by each school district or board
  • Reasoning tests usually have three parts: verbal (word analogies, classification), quantitative (number series, number puzzles) and nonverbal (shape patterns and matrices).
  • Districts and boards choose their own tests and cut-off scores, so ask your school which test it uses.
  • Practice builds familiarity and confidence. It is not a way to guarantee a score.

โฑ๏ธ New: timed tests. Most games below have a Timed test button: 15 questions in 10 minutes with answers revealed at the end, just like the real thing. Use it once your child is confident in practice mode.

Verbal reasoning

Analogies, odd one out and word relationships.

Quantitative reasoning

Number series, number puzzles and patterns.

Nonverbal reasoning

Shape sequences, figure matrices and reflections.

Tips for parents

  • Keep it playful. Young children do best when practice feels like puzzles, not tests.
  • Ask "what is the rule?" for every pattern, and let your child explain it in their own words.
  • Mix verbal, number and shape puzzles in each session.
  • Avoid over-preparing. The aim is familiarity, not memorizing answers.
