How to Teach Place Value: A Simple Guide for Parents

Place value is the idea that a digit's value depends on where it sits in a number. In 352, the 3 is worth three hundred, the 5 is worth fifty, and the 2 is worth two. It sounds simple, but it's the foundation for adding and subtracting larger numbers, multiplying by 10, rounding and decimals. When children struggle with written methods, a shaky understanding of place value is often the cause.

The big ideas

  • Ten of one place makes one of the next. Ten ones make a ten, ten tens make a hundred, ten hundreds make a thousand.
  • Position gives value. The digit 4 can mean 4, 40, 400 or 4,000 depending on its column.
  • Zero holds a place. In 305, the zero shows there are no tens. Without it, the number would be 35.
  • Numbers can be split in different ways. 352 is 3 hundreds, 5 tens and 2 ones, but it's also 35 tens and 2 ones. This flexibility matters for subtraction.

Start hands-on

Children understand place value best when they can bundle and count real objects. Try these:

  • Bundling straws or sticks: count out loose sticks, then wrap every ten in a rubber band. Ask, โ€œHow many tens? How many ones left over?โ€
  • Base-ten blocks: if you have them, cubes, rods and flats show ones, tens and hundreds clearly.
  • Money: 1, 10 and 100 coins or notes are a natural place value model.
  • Place value chart: draw columns labelled hundreds, tens and ones, and have your child build numbers with digit cards.
๐ŸŽฎ Try it now: Place Value Quest asks children to find the value of each digit and build numbers from hundreds, tens and ones, with levels from 2-digit numbers to decimals.

A typical progression

Typical yearPlace value focus
Foundationโ€“Year 1Counting to 100, grouping in tens, teen numbers as โ€œten and some moreโ€
Year 2Tens and ones in 2-digit numbers, comparing and ordering
Year 3Hundreds, tens and ones, partitioning 3-digit numbers
Year 4Thousands, rounding, tenths and hundredths
Year 5โ€“Year 6Large numbers into the millions, decimals to thousandths, multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000

Exact timing differs between curricula, so use this as a rough guide.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Writing numbers as they sound: โ€œthree hundred and fiveโ€ written as 3005. Use a place value chart to show the zero holding the tens place.
  • Teen numbers: we say โ€œseventeenโ€ with the seven first, but write the 1 first. Point out that the 1 means one ten.
  • โ€œAdd a zeroโ€ to multiply by 10: it works for whole numbers but not decimals (2.5 ร— 10 is 25, not 2.50). It's better to say the digits move one place to the left.
  • Comparing by the first digit only: 89 is not bigger than 102. Compare the number of digits first, then the biggest place value.

Place value and rounding

Rounding is place value in action. To round 347 to the nearest ten, children need to know it sits between 340 and 350, and that the ones digit (7) decides which ten is closer. A number line makes this visible. Our Rounding Rally game shows a number line for every question, and Greater Than, Less Than practises comparing numbers by place value.

Quick questions to ask at home

  • โ€œWhat is the 6 worth in 462?โ€
  • โ€œWhat number is 10 more than 395? 100 more?โ€
  • โ€œMake the biggest number you can with the digits 4, 9 and 1.โ€
  • โ€œHow many tens are there in 250?โ€

A couple of questions like these at dinner or in the car keeps place value thinking fresh.

Frequently asked questions

What is place value in simple terms?

Place value means a digit is worth a different amount depending on its position in a number. In 352, the 3 means 3 hundreds, the 5 means 5 tens and the 2 means 2 ones.

How do you explain place value to a child?

Use objects you can bundle, such as sticks grouped into tens with rubber bands, or coins worth 1, 10 and 100. Then build numbers on a chart with hundreds, tens and ones columns.

Why is place value important?

It underpins adding and subtracting larger numbers, multiplying and dividing by 10, rounding, and decimals. Many difficulties with written methods come from gaps in place value.
