The Mystery of the Moai
On Rapa Nui, also called Easter Island, stand nearly a thousand huge stone statues called moai. They were carved by the islandโs people hundreds of years ago, mostly from soft volcanic rock at a quarry called Rano Raraku. Some are taller than a house and weigh as much as several elephants. For a long time, people wondered how the statues were moved across the island without wheels or large animals. Experiments have shown that a team pulling ropes on each side can โwalkโ a statue forward by rocking it from side to side, which matches stories told by the islanders themselves.
- What are moai?
- What were most moai carved from?
- What puzzle did people wonder about for a long time?
- How do experiments suggest the statues were moved?
- Why is it important that the experiments match the islandersโ stories?
