Free PAT Maths & Reading Practice Games

Many New Zealand schools use Progressive Achievement Tests (PATs) from NZCER to check progress in maths and reading. They are low-stakes tests that help teachers plan. The best preparation is simply regular practice of everyday maths and reading skills, which our free games make fun.

Official information
NZCER: PATs
  • PATs are online tests in areas such as mathematics, reading comprehension, and punctuation and grammar.
  • They are designed to show progress over time, not to pass or fail.
  • Schools decide which tests to use and when.

⏱️ New: timed tests. Most games below have a Timed test button: 15 questions in 10 minutes with answers revealed at the end, just like the real thing. Use it once your child is confident in practice mode.

Mathematics

Number knowledge, strategies, measurement, geometry and statistics.

Reading comprehension and vocabulary

Understanding texts and word meaning.

Punctuation and grammar

Capital letters, punctuation marks and word types.

Tips for parents

  • Treat PATs as a check-up, not an exam: no cramming needed.
  • A little daily reading and number practice makes the biggest difference.
  • Ask your child’s teacher what the results show and what to practise next.
