Odd and Even Numbers for Kids: Simple Ways to Teach Them
Even numbers can be split into pairs with nothing left over. Odd numbers always have one left over. That's the whole idea, and with a pile of socks or counters most young children grasp it quickly. From there, a simple rule about the last digit lets them sort any number, however big, and a few odd and even patterns make a handy way to check sums.
Step 1: Make pairs
Start with real objects. Put out 6 socks and ask your child to match them into pairs: 3 pairs, none left over, so 6 is even. Now try 7 socks: 3 pairs and one lonely sock, so 7 is odd. Repeat with different numbers of counters, toy cars or pieces of fruit. You can also ask โcan we share these fairly between two people?โ Even numbers share equally; odd numbers leave one over.
Step 2: Spot the pattern
Count along a number line and say โodd, even, odd, evenโ. Then colour the even numbers on a 100 square. Children will notice the even numbers line up in columns, ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8. Skip counting in 2s from 0 gives the even numbers, and counting in 2s from 1 gives the odd numbers. Our guide on how to teach skip counting has more ideas.
Step 3: The last-digit rule
To tell if any number is odd or even, look only at the last digit (the ones digit):
| Last digit | The number is | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 | Even | 14, 230, 3,458 |
| 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 | Odd | 27, 105, 70,001 |
Why only the last digit? Every ten can be split into 5 pairs, and every hundred into 50 pairs, so the tens, hundreds and thousands are always even. Only the ones can leave one over.
Step 4: Odd and even rules for calculations
Once children are confident, explore what happens when you add, subtract or multiply odd and even numbers. Let them discover the rules with examples first:
| Calculation | Result | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Even + even | Even | 4 + 6 = 10 |
| Odd + odd | Even | 3 + 5 = 8 |
| Even + odd | Odd | 4 + 3 = 7 |
| Odd โ odd | Even | 9 โ 3 = 6 |
| Even โ odd | Odd | 8 โ 3 = 5 |
| Even ร any whole number | Even | 4 ร 3 = 12 |
| Odd ร odd | Odd | 3 ร 5 = 15 |
Pairs explain the adding rules nicely: two odd numbers each have one left over, and the two leftovers make a new pair. These rules are also a quick way to check work. If a child writes 37 + 48 = 84, an odd plus an even must be odd, so 84 can't be right (the answer is 85).
Is zero odd or even?
Zero is even. It can be split into two equal groups (of zero), it sits between โ1 and 1, which are both odd, and it ends in 0. Children often think zero is โneitherโ, so it's worth discussing.
Games and activities
- Street numbers: on many streets, houses on one side have odd numbers and the other side have even numbers. Look on your next walk.
- Dice sums: roll two dice, and guess if the total will be odd or even before adding. Over many rolls, odd and even totals come up equally often.
- Card sort: deal number cards and sort them into an odd pile and an even pile as fast as possible.
- Odds and evens: the classic hand game. Each player shows some fingers, and one player wins if the total is odd, the other if it's even.
- Jump and clap: count aloud, jumping on odd numbers and clapping on even numbers.
Common mistakes
- Looking at the first digit. 85 is odd even though it starts with 8. Always check the last digit.
- Thinking zero is neither odd nor even. It's even.
- Confusing the everyday meaning of โoddโ. In maths, odd just means one left over, not strange.
- Muddling the rules. Odd + odd is even, not odd. Go back to pairs of counters to check.
When do children learn odd and even numbers?
Children usually explore odd and even numbers with objects around Class 1, and use the last-digit rule with larger numbers around Class 2. Later, odd and even ideas reappear in times tables, factors and prime numbers. For more early number ideas, see our guide on counting and number sense, and try the Counting game.
Frequently asked questions
How do you explain odd and even numbers to a child?
Use real objects and make pairs. If every object has a partner, the number is even. If one is left over, the number is odd. Then show that the last digit tells you: 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 mean even.
Is 0 an odd or even number?
Zero is even. It can be split into two equal groups, it ends in 0, and it sits between the odd numbers โ1 and 1.
How can you tell if a big number is odd or even?
Look only at the last digit. If it is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 the number is even, and if it is 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 the number is odd. For example, 3,458 is even.
What is an odd number plus an odd number?
An odd number plus an odd number is always even, for example 3 + 5 = 8. The two leftover ones make a new pair.
