Basketball Maths Game

Basketball Maths is a free basketball shooting game where every shot starts with a maths question. Choose an easy question for a 2-point shot near the hoop or a harder one for a 3-pointer from downtown, answer it, then time your release on the power meter for a swish. Play a 10-shot shootout or go head to head against Robo.

How to play Basketball Maths

  1. Choose your maths (Year 1 to Year 6, or a times tables focus), the game (a 10-shot Shootout to beat your best, or Vs Robo) and the shooting: Timing, or Practice, where every right answer scores.
  2. For each shot, choose a 2-pointer (an easier question, close to the hoop) or a 3-pointer (a harder question, from further out). Press 2 or 3, or tap the button.
  3. Answer the question: tap an answer or press 1, 2, 3 or 4. A wrong answer rims out, and the game shows you how to work it out.
  4. A right answer lets you shoot! Watch the power meter and press Shoot (or Space, or tap the court) when the marker is in the green. The middle of the green is a perfect swish.

About Basketball Maths

Basketball Maths gives children a real choice on every shot: play it safe with an easier question for 2 points, or take on a harder question for a 3-pointer. That simple choice builds confidence and a healthy attitude to challenge, as children learn that harder questions are worth more. A right answer lets them shoot, and a generous power meter makes the timing fun rather than frustrating, with a perfect swish for a release in the middle of the green. A wrong answer rims out, and a short worked method, such as “Split 34 into 30 + 4. 30 × 6 = 180 and 4 × 6 = 24. 180 + 24 = 204”, shows how to get it next time.

Adding within 10 and 20 suits Year 1, and within 100 suits Year 2. Times tables and division suit Years 3–4, bigger multiplication and fractions of amounts suit Year 5, and fractions, decimals, percentages and order of operations suit Year 6. The times tables focus mixes the easier tables (2, 3, 4, 5 and 10) for 2-pointers with the trickier ones (6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12) for 3-pointers. Play the 10-shot Shootout to beat your best score, or take turns against Robo, a friendly robot who sometimes gets its own maths wrong.

Frequently asked questions

How does scoring work in Basketball Maths?

Choose a 2-pointer or a 3-pointer before each shot. A 2-pointer asks an easier question and a 3-pointer asks a harder one. Answer right, then release the shot in the green part of the power meter to score 2 or 3 points. A release in the middle of the green is a perfect swish.

What is Practice mode?

In Practice mode every right answer scores, so younger children can enjoy the maths without worrying about the timing. The power meter still moves, but the ball always goes in when the answer is right.

Who is Robo?

Robo is a friendly computer player. In Vs Robo, you and Robo take turns to shoot, five shots each. Robo answers questions too, and sometimes gets them wrong, so watch closely and check its maths! The scores are usually close.

Can we practise only times tables?

Yes. Choose the Times tables focus: 2-pointers use the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables, and 3-pointers use the 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 times tables and missing-number questions.

Is Basketball Maths free and safe?

Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up, no chat and no adverts for children to click. It works in any browser on a computer, tablet or phone.
